LINCOLN PARK (WWJ) — An investigation is underway Downriver after a police officer was shot Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting happened along Outer Drive near Fort Street in Lincoln Park.

Lincoln Park police officials haven’t commented on the incident, but Michigan State Police confirmed their Special Investigations Section has been requested to investigate.

MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw told reporters Tuesday evening the shooting happened while the officer was conducting a narcotics investigation in the area. At some point, multiple officers and the suspect exchanged fire with each other, Shaw said.

One officer and the suspect were hit and taken to the hospital. Shaw said rumors that the suspect had been killed were not true.

Police officers from several neighboring communities, including Southgate, Trenton, River Rouge, Woodhaven and Detroit, responded to the scene.

WWJ Newsradio 950’s Darrylin Horne spoke to a witness at the scene who said she heard a series of three shots before seeing a man running away from officers, who were telling him to drop his weapon.

“He was just running. The police tried to tell him to stop running and two more shots were fired,” Tyanna Horn said, noting she saw the suspect fall to the ground.

“I started crying for a minute. It was scary because it happened right in front of my grandma's house and I was outside,” Horn said. “I had my niece in my hands. I was watching the baby, had her in my hands, just playing with her. And we just heard shots and ran in the house.”
