LIVONIA (WWJ) -- Livonia Public School District administrators are warning parents that some bus routes will soon be canceled.
A letter sent to parents on Wednesday evening said plans are being drafted to develop scheduled, rotating cancelations in order for any disruption to be as brief as possible.
The district will be sending robocalls and emails to parents as far in advance as possible.
Over 7,500 Livonia students are assigned to a bus route. The letter to parents notes that all cancelations are temporary while new drivers are recruited and trained.
LPS services K-12 and post-secondary students at 23 schools, and transports across more than 36 square miles within the district as well as to and from out-of-district special education programs. Drivers also provide one-way transportation for Livonia middle and high school athletics programs, in addition to school field trips.
So far this in the 2021-22 school year, the district has used substitute drivers and some supervisors as a way to avoid any route cancelations.
Livonia administrators say districts across the state and country are facing a critical shortage of bus drivers.
Huron Valley schools implemented a rotating bus schedule this week, giving priority to high-ridership areas. Details on the new transportation services can be found at www.hvs.org.
