LIVONIA, Mich. — A Livonia police officer was stabbed in the leg Friday morning after an armed man experiencing an apparent mental health crisis became aggressive inside the police department's lobby, authorities said.
It broke out just after 9:00 a.m. when the man went into the lobby, pulled out a knife and made statements indicating he was in crisis, according to the Livonia Police Department.
Officers and a crisis clinician attempted to de-escalate the situation and engage the man. When those efforts were unsuccessful, officers deployed a Taser. After multiple Taser attempts, the man fell to the ground and officers attempted to take him into custody.
During the struggle, the man stabbed an officer in the leg. Police said another officer, who had his gun drawn, was kicked by the man, causing an accidental discharge of one round. Authorities confirmed no one was struck by the gunfire.
The injured officer was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.
The man was taken into custody at the scene and transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries and a psychological evaluation. The incident remains under investigation.
