Longest-serving sheriff in Michigan dies in accident

(WWJ) Michigan's longest-serving sheriff has died at age 63 after an accident at his home in the Upper Peninsula over the weekend.

Houghton County Sheriff Brian "Slim" McLean had been with the department for 34 years. He was first elected sheriff in 1996, and was reelected every four years since.

Speaking with WWJ's Beth Fisher, Houghton County Commission Chair Al Koskela said it's a tough loss.

"They think he had a heart attack and he fell on his dock," Koskela said.

Neighbors helped McLean, who'd suffered significant injuries, before an emergency crew arrived.

He was taken to a hospital in Marquette where he was listed in critical condition and died Monday night. According to a published obituary, he had his family by his side.

Koskela said McLean was a good, fair sheriff who knew everybody.

Koskela personally met McLean about 40 years ago.

"I got a ticket from him way back when he was just a deputy, for improper passing I think it was or something like that," he told Fisher.

Messages of mourning and support have been pouring in on the department's Facebook page, which changed its profile image to a badge with a black band across the middle — a symbol of mourning for a fallen officer.

Craig Morris commented: "What a sad day for our community. Slim was one of the GOOD guys. He will be sorely missed by anyone that knew him as well as those that didn't have that privilege."

Heidi Smythe wrote: "Best sheriff ever!! He left a legacy and will be remembered always. An amazing man and an amazing family....my heart breaks for your loss and for the loss of a such a huge part of the community. Sending many hugs, love and heartfelt sympathies."

Funeral arraignments are pending.
