METAMORA TWP. (WWJ) — An Oxford woman who spent more than 25 years working in Lapeer Community Schools has died in a crash involving an older military truck.
“We are saddened to report the passing of Roxann Johnson, one of our beloved elementary special education teachers and a friend to so many in our school community. Roxann passed away as the result of injuries sustained this morning in a car accident,” the school district said in a press release.
Officials said Johnson, 61, taught in the district for more than 25 years and “has touched the lives of so many beyond the Turrill School Community.”
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. on South Lapeer Road (M-24) near Brocker Road in Metamora Township, north of Oxford near the Oakland County-Lapeer County line.
Metamora Twp. police officials said a 1971 AM General M931A2 was headed south on M-24 when it crossed the centerline, colliding with Johnson’s Jeep Cherokee that was headed in the other direction.
Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders used the jaws of life to remove her from the Jeep.
The driver of the military truck, a 17-year-old boy from Genesee County, was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
M-24 between Kile Road and Brocker Road was shut down for more than two hours while authorities investigated.
The crash remains under investigation and officials are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the Metamora Township Police Department at 810-678-3657 or Lapeer County Central Dispatch at 810-667-0292.
Lapeer Community Schools officials said district emotional support staff will be on-hand for the remainder of the week to provide ongoing support for students and staff.
“Please keep the family and those who worked closest with Roxann in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the district’s press release said.
