MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (WWJ) – Who has the best macaroni and cheese in Macomb County?
That question will soon be answered as Mac Madness returns for a second year.
The contest, for local chefs to show off their cooking skills, began last year as a way to help local restaurants struggling with the pandemic. The contest is organized by Macomb County Planning and Economic Development (MCPED).
Any Macomb County restaurant that offers a homemade macaroni and cheese dish is eligible to enter the contest from March 4-11. Voting will begin on March 17.
The winner will walk away with a $2,500 dollar grant and a plaque that acknowledges "the best mac in the Mac.”
The restaurant that comes in second place will also receive a $1,000 dollar grant, while third and fourth place runners up will each get $500.

Organizers say national franchises are excluded from the competition and only restaurants are able to enter – the public cannot submit on behalf of a restaurant.
Once registration closes, entrants will be featured in a public voting period, with restaurants squaring off in a bracket-style competition.
Last year’s Mac Madness champion was Sherwood Brewing Company in Shelby Township. Simple Plate in Warren finished second, while Romeo’s Jayell Smoke House and Bistro Orleans in Sterling Heights took third and fourth, respectively.
MCPED Director Vicky Rowinski says they got a great response from the community last year and wanted to bring the excitement back for a second year.
“I know there are countless made in Macomb mac ‘n cheese dishes that deserve recognition and we hope to shine the spotlight on as many as we can,” Rowinski said. “But ultimately, we’re looking to crown this year’s big cheese, so let the games begin!”
