Stabbing suspect shot by Shelby Township police after refusing commands, charging at officers with knife
SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - An investigation is underway after police shot a suspect who allegedly stabbed another person during a domestic violence incident at a Macomb County apartment on Tuesday morning.
The Shelby Township Police Department said the incident originated as a domestic violence complaint in the 45000 block of Utica Green, at Shelby Oaks Apartments near Utica and Mound roads, with initial reports stating one person had been stabbed.
Officers responded to the scene around 6:23 a.m. and when they arrived, police were confronted by the suspect, who was still armed with a knife, the department said.
The officers demanded the suspect drop the weapon, but police said the man refused to comply and instead rushed at officers with the knife.
Police open fired, the department said, and hit the man.
"Officers on scene immediately rendered aid to the injured suspect," officials stated. "He was then transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries."
The suspect's condition was not released.
None of the officers were injured in the incident, officials added, which was contained to the area and poses no further threat to the surrounding community.
Shelby Township PD stated in a press release that the case has been turned over to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office for further investigation.
Authorities said no other information will be released pending the ongoing investigation.
