MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) – A pair of Macomb County Sheriff's deputies and members of the Macomb Township Fire Department are being called heroes after saving a 2-year-old girl's life over the weekend.
They were called to a home in Macomb Township Saturday morning for a toddler who was not breathing.
When first responders showed up they found the girl unresponsive in a swimming pool. Her father was performing CPR when deputies Jonathon Potocki and Mitchell Blount arrived and they took over lifesaving measures.
As the ambulance was facing "unanticipated delays," the deputies made the quick decision to put the girl in Blount's car and they raced her to the hospital. Macomb Township Fire personnel rode in the patrol car with the toddler and continued emergency lifesaving measures.
When they got to the hospital, the toddler was breathing and had a pulse. She was airlifted to a hospital with a Level-II pediatric trauma designation and was reported to be in stable condition.
"This type of situation is one of the worst a parent can experience," Macomb County Sheriff Wickersham said, per a press release. "The responding Deputies and Fire personnel acted swiftly, ensuring the toddler received lifesaving measures and hospital transportation as quickly as possible. I applaud these public servants for their exceptional efforts."
As of Monday afternoon, the parents said the toddler has been released from the hospital and is expected to fully recover.
Cmdr. Jason Abro with the sheriff's department tells WWJ all personnel involved used their training to perfection to save the girl's life.
"A call of this nature, it raises the awareness level of all involved. You can see that all personnel involved were well trained, they went back to what they learned in training and provided life-saving measures without a glitch," he said.
