DETROIT (WWJ) -- A fatal shooting at the Russell Industrial Center in Detroit this week has left the victim’s family devastated.

Family members say 23-year-old Sam Gartley of Macomb Township had been running a business in the sprawling building at 1600 Clay Street, and was working at the complex on Monday, June 5 when he was shot and killed.

The incident is being described as an attempted robbery.

Gartley’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for funeral expenses, where more than $11,000 has been raised, far exceeding the campaign’s goal of $5,000

“Our beloved Sam recently passed,” the page reads in part. “Sam was a wonderful brother, cousin, friend, son and boyfriend who touched the lives of those around him. He leaves behind devastated family and friends. Sam had much life left to live and has been taken from us too soon.”

Bobi Gartley, the victim’s mother, is asking anyone with information on the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
