DETROIT (WWJ) — A man accused of opening fire at a Detroit nightclub has been charged with attempted murder.
Damond Hunter of Detroit has been charged with a long list of felonies after being arrested last week at Detroit Metro Airport.
Hunter, 32, is being held on a $5 million bond.
Around 2:45 a.m. on Friday, March 29 Hunter allegedly got into an argument with a group of other men at a nightclub on West Chicago near Oakman Boulevard, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
At some point that altercation escalated to violence, as Hunter allegedly pulled out a gun and fired into the group of people multiple times before fleeing the scene. The prosecutor's office did not release any other details about the alleged argument.
Five Detroit men — ages 33, 42, 45 and 48 — were all hit, according to the prosecutor's office. They were all taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Hunter was arrested April 10 at Detroit Metro Airport following a Detroit Police Department investigation. He was reportedly returning to Detroit from Tennessee.
"I have seen countless arguments escalate into serious shooting incidents over the most trivial things. Any time a weapon is introduced, it never ends well - most times tragically. We must stop escalating the violence into violence. In this case, the only good thing that came out of it is that no one died," Prosecutor Kym Worthy said, per a press release.
Hunter was arraigned last weekend in 36th District Court in Detroit. He has been charged with five counts of assault with intent to murder, five counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, one count of felon in possession of a firearm and 11 counts of felony firearm.
His bond was set at $5 million during his April 13 arraignment and it remained the same after a bond redetermination hearing on April 15. Hunter is due back in court Friday morning for a probable cause conference.
