(WWJ) An alleged bank robber is behind bars after he was caught in the act by Sterling Heights Police.

At 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, officers got a 911 call about an armed robbery in progress at the Citizens Bank on 14 Mile Rd., near Mound Rd.

The caller reported that the suspect — a white man armed with box cutter style knife — was still in the bank and was stealing money from the cashier’s drawer.

"Within minutes of the 911 call, Sterling Heights Police officers arrived on scene and heroically took the suspect into custody," police said in a release.

Evidence was recovered, including the weapon, and approximately $2,600 in cash.

No injuries were reported.

"The Sterling Heights Police Department prides itself on being one of the safest cities in the State of Michigan. Due to the outstanding job by responding officers a very dangerous individual was removed from the streets quickly," police added.

The suspect's name is being withheld at this time.

Police said information on charges, along with the man's mugshot, would be released in the next couple of days.
