Man charged in shooting of 19-year-old woman in Ferndale

(WWJ) The victim was at home in her own bed, according to police.

A 47-year-old Detroit man has been arrested and charged in the shooting of a 19-year-old Ferndale woman back in the spring.


At around 2:15 a.m. on April 30, it's alleged that 47-year-old Omar Alexander-Roman Coney approached a home -- in the 300 block of W. Bennet, near 8 Mile Rd. and Woodward Ave., and fired several shots into the house.

The victim, who was lying in bed at the time, was shot multiple times, according to Ferndale police.

Coney fled before police arrived on the scene, and the woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Fortunately. she survived her injuries.

Ferndale detectives spent several months investigating the shooting and compiling evidence. Eventually, police say physical evidence linked the case to another shooting that on West Bloomfield on June 17.

Ferndale detectives were able to identify the suspect arrested the West Bloomfield Case -- Coney -- was responsible in the Ferndale shooting as well, police said.

Coney was arraigned in 43rd District Court Monday on one count of assault with the intent to commit murder; three counts of felony firearm - third or subsequent offence; one count of discharging a firearm at a building and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

Bond for Coney was set at $500,000 cash or surety and his next court appearance was scheduled for Oct. 19.

Police did not say if or why the victim was targeted. Her name was not released.
