NORTHFIELD TWP. (WWJ) – A 69-year-old Ann Arbor man has died after his kayak overturned while on a Washtenaw County lake with his grandson Tuesday morning.
While the 3-year-old was rescued from the water, an hours-long search for the man ended with the discovery of his body.
Police officers and firefighters from Northfield Township were called to Horseshoe Lake – near US-23 and 6 Mile – shortly before 11 a.m. on reports of a missing kayaker.
Police officials say the child was retrieved from the water, but his grandfather went underwater and did not resurface. It was not immediately clear who rescued the child.
With family members present, the Washtenaw County Rescue Dive Team and Green Oak Township police and fire crews, along with Metro Park authorities, began searching for the man using boats and drones, but could not find him.
After the rescue effort proved negative, the dive team began searching the water using sonar to attempt to recover the missing man.
He was eventually found in about 20 feet of water and he was pronounced dead shortly before 2:30 p.m.
Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing and the man’s body has been turned over to the medical examiner’s office to determine an exact cause of death.
"The hearts of the entire Washtenaw and Livingston County's first responders ho out to his family for their loss,” Northfield Township police officials said in a press release.
