(WWJ) The body of a 64-year-old man has been recovered from a pond after a tragic accident in Oakland County.
It happened Sunday evening, in the 1500 Block of Essay Lane in Highland Township.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said the victim, a Highland Township resident, was mowing the lawn when his hat blew off and into a pond.
A witness watching through a window said she saw the man trying to retrieve his hat from the water. The witness stepped away for a few minutes, and when she looked back she could no longer see the man at the shore of the pond.
The witness called the landlord who called 911.
Deputies arrived, assessed the situation, and requested help from the OCSO Dive Search and Rescue Team.
The victim was eventually found in about 14 feet of water, but was beyond help by that time, officials said.
He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy has been scheduled.
The man's name was not released.
