DETROIT (WWJ) - A suspect wanted for a gruesome homicide in Genesee County was shot and killed by state troopers late Monday night after he allegedly brandished a weapon at his passenger during a traffic stop in Detroit.
According to Michigan State Police, the incident unfolded just before midnight on northbound Telegraph Road, north of Seven Mile in Detroit as troopers with the Second and Third District Fugitive team and the MSP Emergency Support Team (ES Team) attempted to execute an arrest warrant on the male suspect.
Troopers said the man was wanted out of Burton in Genesee County for domestic homicide.
As reported by WJRT, the man allegedly killed and dismembered his wife, placing her body parts in trash bags and leaving the bags in a bath tub at the apartment.
The woman's remains were were discovered Saturday, July 15, after Burton police officers responded to the home to conduct a welfare check.
Their investigation eventually lead police to believe the suspect was in Detroit. On Monday, troopers spotted the man driving on Telegraph in Detroit with a female passenger around 11:40 p.m. when marked state police cars pulled him over.
When the suspect stopped, troopers noticed he had a firearm in the car and pointed the gun at himself before aiming it at his female passenger.
"As he pointed the gun towards the passenger he was shot by multiple troopers," MSP said. "The suspect was pronounced dead on scene."
Troopers said the passenger sustained minor injuries from glass fragments in the incident, but was otherwise unhurt.
The investigation was handed over to Detroit Police Department's Homicide Task Force. As standard practice for all officer-involved shootings, all the troopers who fired at the suspect were placed on paid administrative leave.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the county prosecutor for review.
