LANSING (WWJ) — One man is in custody and police are searching for another after a traffic stop in Lansing Friday night led to a police chase that was called off when the suspect drove onto school property.

It all unfolded around 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 31 when Michigan State Police troopers with the Lansing Post were conducting surveillance on a man on North Capitol Avenue.

The suspect, 25-year-old Javon Basey of Lansing, had multiple warrants for his arrest, including for fleeing and eluding after fleeing a traffic stop in April, according to MSP.

Troopers and members of the Lansing Police Department's Violent Crimes Initiative Team saw Basey get into a gray Ford F-150 as a passenger and tried to conduct a traffic stop.

But when troopers got out and approached the truck, the driver reversed the F-150 into the patrol car and sped away. The troopers were not injured in the incident.

Troopers gave chase but terminated the pursuit when the suspect drove onto the property of Lansing Everett High School. Authorities said he drove on the sidewalks and a grassy area at the school.

Police found the truck abandoned on N. Walnut Street and a K-9 track led authorities to Basey, who was hiding in the rafters of a garage on Jenison Street. He was taken into custody and held at the Lansing City Jail on his outstanding warrants.

Basey is also expected to face additional charges in connection with Friday's incident.

Authorities did not find the driver of the truck, but did find his ID and authorities will seek charges against him for felonious assault on a police officer and fleeing and eluding.
