PONTIAC (WWJ) -- One person was killed and another was taken to a hospital after an ATV crash in Pontiac over the weekend.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Pennsylvania Ave. and Melrose Ave.

An investigation found that a 25-year-old Flat Rock man was driving a 1987 Yamaha 30 ATV eastbound on Pennsylvania when he "disregarded a stop sign" and crashed into 2020 GMC Terrain being driven by a 37-year-old Pontiac woman, officials said.

The ATV driver, identified as Anthony Thomas Cowgill, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Cowgill's passenger, a 31-year-old woman from Macon, Georgia, was also taken to a hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

The GMC driver, who was wearing her seatbelt, was not injured.

In a news release, the sheriff's office noted that the ATV was not legal for roadway use, and neither person on the ATV was wearing a helmet.

“Once again, a preventable tragedy has occurred,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, in a statement. "An individual illegally operating an ATV lost his life, and his passenger was seriously injured. Incidents like this underscore the importance of safety and proper equipment use to help avoid such heartbreaking outcomes.”

An investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is ongoing.
