MONROE (WWJ) – A screaming man running across school property last week sent an elementary school in Monroe into partial lockdown.

While school officials at Arborwood Elementary took precautions to keep kids safe, officials say it turned out to be a false alarm when they learned the man was running from a swarm of bees, according to a report from The Detroit Free Press.

The school sent a letter home to parents of students at Arborwood notifying them the school had gone into “precautionary secure mode,” according to the report.

Officials said they spotted the man running onto school property and screaming, so the buildings’ exterior doors were locked while classes continued as normal, the report says.

When a school resource officer went out to investigate, he found out it was a “petrified neighbor fleeing from the bees in his yard,” according to the Free Press.

The fleeing man’s age was not disclosed and it was not clear whether he was stung by the bees.

“Although this situation turned out to be just a misunderstanding, it provided a good opportunity to practice safety measures and familiarize new students and staff with safety procedures,” the district’s letter reportedly said.
