DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit police are investigating after officers found themselves involved in a downtown shootout late Saturday.
It was the second shooting of the weekend downtown Detroit, though a shooting that wounded two bystanders Friday night did not involve police.
Officials say officers in the area heard gunfire coming from the area of Congress and Brush Streets around 11:45 p.m. and quickly responded.
When they got to the area and saw a shootout between multiple suspects, the officers had to duck for cover, as shots were being fired from multiple directions.
Detroit Police Department officials say it appears the officers fired multiple shots in the course of defending themselves and others in the area.
One armed suspect was shot as a result of the officers’ actions, according to a Detroit police press release.
Authorities say three people were shot during the shootout, but only one suspect is believed to have been hit by a DPD officer.
Officials did not release any information about the people who were shot during the incident.
All three people who were shot received aid from officers until medics arrived, and they were all taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Police officials have not said what led to the initial shootout, and it was not clear exactly how many people were involved.
Three guns were recovered from the scene, police officials said.
Investigators will be examining all body camera footage and any other video available to “fully understand the circumstances,” officials said.
“The Department is committed to transparency and will provide updates to the community and media partners when more information is available,” the press release said.
One person was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting near the same intersection in the summer of 2019. Legends Gentleman's Club and Sweetwater Tavern are both located near Brush and Congress, but it was not clear whether those involved in Saturday night's shooting came from either establishment.
