ROMULUS (WWJ) -- A man is in police custody after police say he tried to get into a Wayne County middle school with a gun.
At around 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, Romulus Police said officers responded to Romulus Middle School on a report of an "active shooter."
School employees said they saw a man armed with a handgun attempting to enter the school's main doors, and immediately instituted a lockdown.
The 911 caller also said they believed they heard shots fired.
At that time, Romulus School Board President Porsche Laster wrote on Facebook that all students were safe, and were being held in place in their classrooms.
Police said officers arrived quickly to find the 44-year-old suspect near the main entrance. He was arrested, and a handgun was recovered at the scene.
No one was injured.
Romulus superintendent Dr. Benjamin Edmondson sent a robocall to parents in the district updating them on the situation.
Police said the investigation is ongoing as to the man's motives, but added that there is no ongoing threat to the school or the community.
Police did not share any further details about the suspect, saying that more information will be released as it becomes available.
Investigators remained at the school, located on Wick Road between Wayne and Hannan roads, just across I-94, well into Tuesday afternoon.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Det. Sergeant Otter at 734-942-6857. Callers may remain anonymous.
