(WWJ) It looks like there are some bugs to work out in DTE Energy's new billing system.
About a quarter-million customers of the utility giant have reportedly been affected by a billing error after switching to bank payments to avoid new credit card fees.
WWJ's Chris Fillar reports some are saying their payments erroneously didn't go through, and they were assessed $15 penalties because of it.
According to a spokesperson for DTE, the issue — which had to do with the company's payment portal for payments — has been fixed, and customers were refunded.
“Customers were not charged anything beyond their regular bill. While an automated late fee may appear on some accounts due to this error, any affected customers have been credited for that fee,” DTE's Joelle Krucze said, in a statement published by MLive on Friday.
The new transaction fee for credit card payments — which took effect on March 2 — amounts to $2.99 per transaction for residential customers, and $9.99 per payment for commercial users.
Customers can avoid the fee by paying with their bank account. DTE customers can log into their account online and click on Add Payment Method to set this up.
The other option is to send a check or money order by mail to DTE, or pay in-person by cash or check at authorized retail locations like Kroger, Meijer, or Walmart service desks, or at DTE's own self-service kiosks.
