MARINE CITY (WWJ) - A community in St. Clair County is banding together to find vandals responsible for busting up and destroying bathrooms at a little league ball park.
Dan Van de Vyver, president for the Marine City Little League, took to Facebook on Monday to share photos of the damage left behind after someone busted up toilets, ripped paper towel dispensers from the walls and left a mess of toilet paper all over bathrooms at the Marine City King Road Fields, located at 6436 King Rd.
The restrooms in the park were built by members of the MCLL, a non-profit group that organizes baseball and softball for boys and girls ages four through 16. They are run by volunteers and donations from the community, which makes the vandalism especially "disheartening," Van de Vyver said.
"Not too many things infuriate or sicken folks, but when a lowlife steals or destroys property used by children, you just can't help yourself," the president added in a post to the MCLL's social media.
While Van de Vyver doesn't have a timeframe for when the vandalism occurred, he said the organization was made aware of the damage over the weekend after a guest at a birthday party in the area went to the use the restroom and found the door ajar.
The field park and its bathrooms had been closed for several months during the off-season, Van de Vyver told WWJ's Beth Fisher.
"A lot of hard work and fundraising went into providing those bathrooms," he continued. "Very likely, this was the act of more than one person, as a vape was left in a toilet, and ashes in a sink."
Anyone with any information about the incident has been asked to call the Marine City Police Department at (810) 765-4040 or Van de Vyver at (586) 405-8111.
Van de Vyver said the city will more than likely cover the cost to repair the bathrooms, but the league, that operates on donations, is in need of a variety of upgrades, including new bleachers and picnic tables.
Those who wishes to make a donation can do so by mailing the MCLL directly at:
