DETROIT (WWJ) - The Michigan Department of Transportation announced to closure of a pedestrian crossing over the Lodge Freeway after concerns were raised over the condition of the aging bridge on Thursday.
The Canfield pedestrian bridge on Canfield Avenue over M-10 is permanently closed, MDOT said, once officials found the structure was rapidly deteriorating.
"Access over M-10 is available to the north at Forest Ave. or to the south at the Seldon St pedestrian bridge," officials advised.
The Canfield crossing, which was built in 1953, was previously inspected during the summer months after a man fell through a different pedestrian bridge spanning M-10 from Spruce Street in Detroit.
According to The Detroit News, Ely Hydes was walking to Comerica Park on May 15 and crossed the Spruce Street pedestrian bridge in Corktown before he fell nearly 15 feet -- landing near oncoming traffic on the Lodge Freeway.
The Canfield bridge, along with nine other bridges in the city, were rated in “poor” condition, according to the MDOT map.
MDOT previously said they had planned pairs of 15 pedestrian bridges between now and 2028, to include the crossing at Canfield.
"The Canfield pedestrian bridge was scheduled to be removed in the future as part of the reconstruction of the M-10 and I-94 interchange ramps", MDOT added in a prepared statement.
Four others are planned to be rebuild as part of the $3 billion I-94 modernization project.
