ROMEO, Mich. (WWJ) – All across metro Detroit on Christmas morning, families opened presents. Some children got toys, others got clothes, and some people got exactly what they were asking for.

But the Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) in Macomb County says they got an unexpected Christmas present – nearly 500 parakeets.

The animal shelter in Romeo said on Facebook on Christmas Eve a resident brought in 497 birds on Thursday night and the group jumped into action to help.

“We were in shock also but could not turn them away as they were all crammed in 7 cages and smothering each other and needed immediate help,” DAWG officials said.

In an update posted Christmas Day, DAWG said one of the birds was recovering well and had gained some weight.

More photos and updates on the birds and other rescued animals can be found on the DAWG Facebook page.

The shelter was able to set up temporary housing for the birds and got some help from Jojo’s Flying Friends, another bird rescue in Romeo who “rushed right over and were able to take over 100 and the babies that require hand feeding.”

Three more rescue groups, including Birds and Beaks, were expected to arrive Sunday to take more birds.

“These birds came from a very unhealthy situation and the irresponsibility of the owner is infuriating,” DAWG said. “However, it truly takes a village to help these animals and we are so thankful for everyone that works together to get them the care and proper homes they deserve.”

Anyone who would like to donate to help the birds can donate to DAWG or any of the other rescue groups involved. Those interested should contact the group directly.

DAWG says the birds will all need veterinary care, housing and food for their 7-15-year lifespan.
