(WWJ) Funeral arrangements are now being made for a Metro Detroit-area husband and wife who died tragically, less than a week apart.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says 66-year-old Scott Levitan, who fell through the ice on an Oakland County lake last week, died on Tuesday, Dec. 31, after being removed from life support.

Levitan was a Livonia resident and a longtime teacher in South Lyon, at Millennium Middle School.

According to the sheriff's office, Levitan's wife Marylou died last Friday in a car crash in Oakland Township -- almost 24 hours to the minute after her husband fell through the ice while ice fishing with his grandson.

The 15-year-old boy and his grandfather were drilling a hole in the ice on Lake George, in Addison Township, when the ice gave way. Officials said the boy called 911 and then tried to get his grandfather out of the water, but the ice broke and he fell in, too.

A neighbor helped the teen and assisted as rescuers got Scott Levitan out of the water. Both the boy and his grandfather were taken to a hospital. The boy was treated and released, but Levitan did not recover.

On Dec. 27, sheriff's officials said Marylou Levitan was on her way to pick up her husband's vehicle when the car she was riding in crashed on Rochester Road at Beach Drive. She was a backseat passenger in a car that was hit head-on by a Ford Edge that crossed the centerline, according to investigators.

Officials said the couple in the car with Marylou were also injured, and the 19-year-old Oakland Township man driving the Edge was airlifted from the scene. There is no update on their conditions at this time.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy that has befallen this family in a very short time,” Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said, in a statement. “Two tragic and unrelated incidents happen within 24 hours of each other…Our prayers are with the family.”

The Levitans were married for 40 years.
