WARREN (WWJ) – Metro Detroiters woke up early Monday morning and gathered at the Commonwealth Club in Warren to watch the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

As the Queen was laid to rest Monday, a little more than a week after her death, millions around the world, including here in Metro Detroit mourned and paid their respects.

Not even a power outage stopped some from gathering at the Commonwealth Club – the oldest, continuous British social club in the U.S. – near 12 Mile and Dequindre.

WWJ’s Charlie Langton reported Monday morning’s storms “didn’t really matter,” as people lit candles and watched the funeral on their phones.

Mary Murphy traveled from Oxford to watch the funeral. She described it as a “sad, but joyous day because she’ll be going to Heaven, and she’s very intelligent and just a wonderful lady.”

Diane Bond, from Scotland, told Langton why she got up early for the funeral.

“I just thought it would be nice to remember the Queen, Her Majesty, and I’ve just always admired her and adored her,” she said.

Attendees of the event drank tea and ate homemade Scottish shortbread cookies.

Lori Monley, President of the Commonwealth Club, said  there were lots of emotional moments over the last week since Her Majesty’s passing.

“I think probably one of the most poignant parts in the last week has been the Honor Guard with Her Majesty’s grandchildren,” she said. “And if there was a dry eye, they don’t have a heart. It was incredible.”
