SHELBY TWP (WWJ) – If you start your morning with a stroll through some Metroparks, you might have to go somewhere else.

Both Kensington Metropark in Milford and Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Township are temporarily closed while crews assess storm damage and conditions throughout the parks.

Severe weather hit Metro Detroit yesterday afternoon (May 19). According to the storm report by the National Weather Service, high winds caused several trees to snap at both Kensington and Stony Creek.

There were also trees and wires reported down across portions of northern and northwest Macomb County.

Wind gusts up to 60 mph were recorded around 4:23 p.m. in Livonia, around 54 mph gusts were recorded at Detroit City Airport on the city’s east side, and a 76 mph wind gust was recorded at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.

Both parks were closed last night. Crews will be out this morning reevaluating the situation.

In a statement, Huron-Clinton Metroparks said “we appreciate your patience and understanding as safety remains the top priority.”
