ANN ARBOR (WWJ) -- The University of Michigan has fired head football coach Sherrone Moore, who is now jailed and expected to face criminal charges, according to police.

A statement from university on Wednesday said Moore "has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior."

Late Wednesday night, Pittsfield Township police confirmed reports that Moore had been arrested.

According to a news release from Pittsfield Township Police, the department responded to a location in the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road at approximately 4:10 p.m. for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault. That's when Moore was taken into custody. The department added that "the incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community."

Police added that the suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor.

In an update Thursday, the Pittsfield PD said the suspect remains in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail and is expected to appear in court for an
arraignment on Friday.

Police added. "The Pittsfield Township Police Department remains committed to transparency while respecting the privacy rights of both victims and the accused. We thank both the media and the public for their patience, and will continue to release details regarding this incident when permissible."

It's unclear at this time what the charges may be.

The Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office said that the investigation remains ongoing, and they did not expect a charging decision Thursday.

Meanwhile, U-M said Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.

Moore had a record of 18 and 8, but lost this year to Ohio State.

No further details about the alleged improper relationship were immediately released.
