ANN ARBOR (WWJ) -- The University of Michigan has fired head football coach Sherrone Moore, who is now being investigated on potential criminal charges.

A statement from university on Wednesday said Moore "has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior."

Later Wednesday evening, multiple news outlets reported that Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining Moore. The department said that Moore was then turned over to Pittsfield Township Police for investigation into possible charges.

Meanwhile, U-M said Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.

Moore had a record of 18 and 8, but lost this year to Ohio State.

No further details about the alleged improper relationship, or the potential charges, were immediately released.
