UNION TWP. (WWJ) — A Mid-Michigan man has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly firing shots from a tractor at someone repossessing his car.

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday on South Lincoln Road in Union Township, not far from the Central Michigan University campus, according to the Isabella County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies and CMU police were called to the scene after getting a report of a man firing a weapon at a tow truck driver.

At the time, a detective with the sheriff’s office was handling an unrelated complaint when the call came in. The detective and another deputy quickly found and detained the suspect, a 29-year-old Union Twp. man.

The sheriff’s office says the tow truck driver was repossessing a car from the suspect’s home when the suspect began shooting at him with a handgun. The suspect was driving a tractor on the road at the time of the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office.

A witness also reported seeing the suspect firing shots from the tractor.

The tow truck driver was not hit and no one else was injured, officials said.

He fled the scene, but he was found a short time later at his home. Investigators recovered casings and a gun from the scene.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to the hospital after he “intentionally struck his head on the plastic divider in the patrol unit,” the sheriff’s office said. He was taken to the Isabella County Jail after he was released from the hospital.

The suspect has been charged with attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon. The sheriff’s office did not release any information about bond or court appearances.
