MANISTEE (WWJ) – A Northern Michigan meth dealer is facing charges after a regular customer helped police catch him.

Around 5 p.m. Monday a Michigan State Police trooper from the Cadillac Post pulled a driver over along US-31 in Manistee and discovered the driver was in possession of meth.

MSP officials say the driver provided the trooper with the name of the person they usually buy from. The driver said they communicate using Facebook Messenger.

The driver also showed the trooper recent transactions they made using a mobile cash app to make drug purchases with the dealer.

After the trooper learned the driver had recently discussed a drug deal with the other man, the driver “was allowed to message the dealer back and make arrangements to purchase methamphetamine,” MSP officials said.

The driver and dealer agreed to meet at Red Szymarek Park in Manistee to complete the transaction. About two and a half hours after the initial traffic stop, the dealer — a 38-year-old Manistee man — was arrested by another trooper from the MSP Traverse City Post.

Authorities recovered about 3.5 grams of meth from the dealer, whose name has not been released, pending arraignment. He is expected to be charged with delivery of methamphetamine and conspiracy to commit a felony.

It was immediately not clear whether the driver that gave the dealer up to police will face any charges.
