WASHINGTON, D.C. (WWJ) – Two Michigan lawmakers are among members of Congress that were arrested near the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. during a protest in support of abortion rights.
Capitol Police escorted U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit and Andy Levin, D-Bloomfield Township, away from the protest as they blocked an intersection between the Supreme Court and Capitol buildings.
More than a dozen protesters were taken away from the scene without handcuffs, according to CNN. Among other lawmakers arrested were Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ihlan Omar of Minnesota and
Capitol Police had warned the group to disperse multiple times before surrounding them and making arrests around 1:30 p.m.
Tlaib and Levin were seen on a Facebook Live video from CPD Action continuing to chat as they were led away.
Levin was charged with crowding or obstructing a street, a violation of the D.C. code and fined $50, according to a report from The Detroit News.
The protest was in response to the SCOTUS decision last month that overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that gave Americans a right to abortion.
