(WWJ) A young Northern Michigan man is facing charges after it's alleged that he paid a family member for marijuana using phony money.

Michigan State Police recovered a large stash of pretty realistic looking counterfeit bills following an investigation in Otsego County over the weekend.

On Sunday, a woman came into the MSP Gaylord post to report she has sold over $400 worth of pot to her cousin, and he'd paid her with what she soon came to suspect was counterfeit cash.

The woman took the money with her to work to use her employer's counterfeit detection pen, which confirmed the bills were fake, police said.

Troopers went to the suspect's home in Elmira and spoke with the 20-year-old man. During the interview, the suspect turned over additional counterfeit bills, police said.

A total of $1,100 in counterfeit bills were recovered.

It's unclear at this time exactly where the fake money originated.

A report is being sent to the Otsego County Prosecutor's Office for review.
