DETROIT (WWJ) -- A suspect is dead and a Michigan State Police trooper is recovering following a shootout on Detroit's west side early Monday morning.

MSP officials say troopers assigned to the Auto Theft team were involved in the shooting at around 4:40 a.m. on May 5 on Murray Hill Street, near Eight Mile and the Lodge Freeway.

MSP Lt. Rene Gonzalez said the trooper was shot three times -- in the leg, back and chest. He was wearing a bullet proof vest, which may have saved his life. The trooper was in serious, but stable condition, according to Gonzalez.

MSP officials say the 23-year-old suspect, whose name has not been released, came out of a house and fired three shots before he was shot and killed in an "exchange of gunfire." Gonzalez couldn't say how many shots police fired.

While the Auto Theft unit was involved in the investigation, exact details surrounding the case have not been released, including what led the officers to the location and what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting.

The investigation is being handled by Detroit Police Department detectives that are on the Homicide Task Force, a multi-jurisdictional unit comprised of MSP and DPD members.
