MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- There's good news in the case of a child who was found safe after going missing in the frigid cold over the weekend in Oakland County.
An Amber Alert went out on Sunday, as Madison Heights Police were asking the community to be on alert for 6-year-old Johnathan Skattebo, who is non-verbal and has autism.
After a massive search effort — involving local, state and even federal authorities — the Madison Heights PD released a statement shortly after 12 a.m. on Monday saying that Johnathan was found safe.
Police went Johnathan went missing after he was seen by family on Sunday, February 1, around 3:30 p.m. before he walked away from his home in the area of 12 Mile Rd. and Dequindre.
As of 10 p.m. Sunday, Madison Heights Police posted an update saying that Johnathan was seen on a ring doorbell camera walking west on Jenifer Avenue, also in the area of 12 Mile and Dequindre — asking that residents keep an eye out for the child.
Police asked everyone to look around their homes, and initiated an organized search party with K-9s, noting that Johnathan likes to hide in cold, dark places.
But, as things turned out, he was found in a neighbor's home.
"After midnight, some neighbors — they came home to their house — and they heard the shower," WWJ's Charlie Langton reported. "Sure enough, this kid was there, and he was taking a shower!"
The boy was taken to a hospital to be checked out, but police said he has not injuries and seemed to be doing OK.
