Monroe County (WWJ) -- In Monroe County, sheriff's deputies have been cracking down on drivers who are failing to obey Michigan's new hands-free driving law that went into effect on June 30.
In response to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signing the law, two separate special traffic enforcement operations were conducted in Bedford and Frenchtown Townships with an emphasis on distracted driving.
In Bedford Township, deputies made 22 traffic stops and issued 15 citations as well as five verbal warnings for holding or using a mobile electronic device.
In Frenchtown Township, there were 19 traffic stops, seven citations and ten verbal warnings for using a mobile device.
The Sheriff’s Office conducted the operations in these two higher traffic volume areas on Friday, June 30 and Friday, July 7.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will continue to perform special traffic enforcement details around the county focusing on distracted driving.
On June 30, Public Act 41 of 2023 went into effect which prohibits an individual from holding or using a mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle, commercial motor vehicle or a school bus.
The goal is to reduce traffic crashes resulting in death and serious injuries.
