DETROIT (WWJ) -- Basketball courts, live DJs and a roller rink are coming to downtown Detroit just in time for some summer fun.
The Monroe Street Midway will open this weekend at the site of the future Monroe Blocks development in downtown Detroit, bringing loads of outdoor excitement to Detroiters for the summer of 2021.
Located just north of Campus Martius Park, the Monroe Street Midway will open on Friday and run until fall 2021. It will be at the same site as this winter’s Monroe Street Drive-In, where more than 1,500 cars visited this winter.
Bedrock, Detroit’s largest real estate company and the owners behind the future Monroe Blocks development, is sponsoring the summer festivities, which will feature:
-- Rollout Detroit, a roller rink operated in partnership with RollerCade, Detroit’s oldest, continuously opened, black-owned roller rink
-- Rocket Mortgage Sports Zone, with four half-court basketball courts and one multi-use sports court
-- Performances by local DJs and outdoor fitness classes
-- Food and beverages served from concession stands and rotating food trucks
-- Original artwork by renowned Detroit artists Sheefy McFly, Olivia Guterson, Phil Simpson and Jessica Care Moore.

Kyle Black, third-generation owner of RollerCade, says Rollout Detroit “will change what it means to roller skate in the city of Detroit.”
“This truly unique and creative roller rink will thrill skaters of every level,” he said in a press release.
Multidisciplinary artist Sheefy McFly will paint a mural directly on the skate rink. His work will also be displayed as another prominent artistic moment within the Midway.
Roller skating sessions will be blocked off in two- or three-hour time slots, costing $10 per session. Skates will be available to rent at $3 a pair. Walk-ins are welcome, but sessions can be booked in advance on the RollerCade website.
The Rocket Mortgage Sports Zone, previously held in nearby Cadillac Square, will have four basketball courts and one multi-use court for games like pickleball, handball and futsal.
It will be open daily from noon to 9 p.m., free of charge.
More details about the activities to be offered at the Monroe Street Midway can be found on DeckedOutDetroit.com.
The Monroe Street Midway is a continuation of Bedrock’s multi-million dollar “Decked Out Detroit” initiative in partnership with the Rocket Community Fund and the City of Detroit.
“We are excited to debut our most immersive experience yet at the Monroe Street Midway and offer residents and families a safe and memorable option for outdoor recreation this spring and summer,” said Ivy Greaner, Chief Operating Officer at Bedrock, per a press release. “RollerCade’s expertise paired with the work of so many talented local artists will make the Midway a truly one-of-a-kind activation.”
