(WWJ) – A man who escaped custody while being extradited to Michigan to face charges for a cold case out of Lapeer County has been charged with first-degree murder.
Chadwick Mobley, 42, was arrested in Montana late last month in connection with the 2011 murder of Andrea Eilber in Lapeer.
But on Sunday, July 9, while Mobley was being extradited by Prisoner Transport Service, LLC, a private company, he escaped at a gas station in Sanders County, Montana. He was recaptured the following day after authorities received tips from the public.
Mobley was arraigned Monday in Lapeer County’s 71-A District Court on one count each of first-degree murder, felony murder and felony firearm, Attorney General Dana Nessel announced.
Eilber was found shot in the head and bound to a chair at a relative’s home in Lapeer County in November 2011. Kenneth Grondin, 19 at the time of the murder, was arrested and later convicted by a jury. He was then released from prison after winning an appeal, but remains under house arrest as he awaits a new trial.
Evidence found at the scene, reportedly on a cigarette butt, in 2011 was reexamined in 2022. The new analysis led investigators to Mobley, who was living in Utah at the time.
Shortly after being questioned by Michigan State Police in Utah, he allegedly fled to Montana. He was ultimately arrested on June 28, before his escape and recapture about a week later.
Authorities have not released any further information about Mobley’s alleged connection to Eilber’s murder. His next court date is scheduled for July 28.
Nessel's office has launched an investigation as to how Mobley managed to escape from the private transport company.
