(WWJ) – A man who was arrested in Montana last month in connection with a Lapeer County cold case has escaped custody.

Chadwick Mobley was set to be extradited to Michigan to face charges in connection with the 2011 murder of Andrea Eilber in Lapeer. The Sanders County Sheriff’s Office in Montana posted to Facebook on Sunday that Mobley had slipped away from a private transport company at a gas station.

Shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday the company was transporting Mobley through Sanders County when he escaped at the Plains Town Pump gas station.

Mobley’s transportation was set up by the U.S. Marshals, according to the sheriff’s office.

Mobley had been arrested in Libby, Montana, and was being held in custody by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

“Just so everyone is on the same page Lincoln County caught this man with help of a citizen in their county. Lincoln County held the man until the agency with the warrant set up transport,” the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook. “Neither Lincoln or Sanders County is responsible for the escape. The private transport is. However, we are now attempting to locate the man and protect the people of Sanders County.”

Authorities in Montana were asking residents to lock their vehicles and homes, as well as all garages and other outbuildings. Officials were instructing people to check their Ring doorbell cameras and other surveillance systems to check for any signs of Mobley.

As of Monday morning officials said there was no new information regarding his escape and he was still at large, though it was “not for lack of looking” on law enforcement’s part.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced earlier this month that Mobley had been arrested in connection with Eilber’s murder.

Eilber, 20, was found shot in the head at her aunt’s home in Lapeer in November 2011. Her boyfriend, then-19-year-old Kenneth Carl “KC” Grondin, was arrested for her murder, according to a report from the County Press. However, the conviction was overturned in 2018.

Mobley was identified as a suspect in the case thanks to DNA evidence found at the murder scene that was reanalyzed in 2022.
