DETROIT (WWJ) – A “bad guy is in jail” after Michigan State Police arrested a suspect who had stolen a U-Haul pick-up truck.
MSP officials say the suspect had been fleeing multiple police agencies over the last week, though authorities have not yet given full details on the crime he was wanted for.
Troopers spotted the suspect, whose name and age have not been released, driving a stolen U-Haul truck on Detroit’s west side in the area of McNichols and Greenfield Roads shortly before 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Authorities lost sight of the suspect shortly after beginning a pursuit and requested aerial assistance from MSP’s Trooper 2 helicopter.
The chopper picked up the stolen vehicle in the area of Outer Drive and Greenfield and tracked it to a home in the 16200 block of Sorrento, near Puritan Avenue and Meyers Road.
Video from the chopper shows the suspect ditching the truck near the house and fleeing on foot.
Troopers found the suspect running and chased him through multiple backyards before eventually arresting him.
Authorities found the suspect was in possession of what is believed to be crack cocaine, MSP said.
MSP canines searched the area and nothing else was located.
The suspect was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for a medical evaluation prior to being lodged at the DDC.
Possible charges are pending review from the prosecutor’s office.
