DETROIT (WWJ) – An Oakland County man has been arrested after Michigan State Police found a military smoke grenade inside his car during a traffic stop on Detroit's northwest side Saturday night.

MSP officials say they stopped a 32-year-old White Lake man driving without a license plate in the area of 8 Mile and Meyers Roads around 9 p.m. Saturday.

During a search of the car, authorities found a grenade and called the bomb squad to determine what type of grenade it was. It was determined to be a military-grade smoke grenade and it will be disposed of, officials said.

A pistol that wasn't registered to the driver was also found during the traffic stop. The pistol had been reported stolen to White Lake police.

The driver, whose name has not been released, admitted to police he had smoked marijuana and took Adderall.

The suspect is a convicted felon and had two previous impaired driving convictions, according to MSP. Authorities say he may be involved in various other crimes in White Lake.

The case is still under investigation and the man will be facing charges, pending prosecutor review, MSP officials said.
