DETROIT (WWJ) — A shooting suspect is in custody, thanks to the help of a Michigan State Police helicopter.

It all began around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when Southfield police reported losing track of a shooting suspect who was driving a black Chrysler 300.

MSP's Trooper 3 was on patrol overhead in the area of I-96 and the Southfield Freeway and spotted the suspect heading east on I-96.

Video from the chopper shows the suspect getting off the freeway at Wyoming and driving to the area of Ohio and Marygrove, where they met up with the driver of a Dodge Challenger.

The driver of the Dodge briefly got out and talked with the shooting suspect, before both drivers took off speeding when they noticed the chopper overhead.

As Trooper 3 followed the suspects, the driver of the Chrysler eventually spun out of control at the intersection of Wyoming and McNichols, narrowly missing an uninvolved car. The driver and at least one other person in the 300 got out of the car and into the back of the Challenger, which again sped off.

The chopper continued following the car, which eventually came to a stop in the area of Gilbert and Michigan Avenue, where three people got out and began to run.

Detroit and Southfield police officers eventually arrested the suspects. MSP officials say both cars were reported stolen and authorities found multiple key fobs and "gear to reprogram keys" were recovered.

Authorities have not released any information about the shooting that prompted the chase. No names of the suspects have been released.

Police are continuing to investigate the case, which is pending prosecutor review.
