As winter storms swirl through the state, Michigan State Police Second District said in a Saturday X post that there were “44 preventable crashes across the district since midnight.”
“Remember, drive for the road conditions, not the speed limit,” said the post. “If you notice you are driving faster than the traffic around you, you are probably going too fast.”
As of Thursday, a coating of 3 to 6 inches of snow was covering the Detroit metro area. This weekend, another storm blew into the area and most of Southeast Michigan was under a Winter Weather Advisory through late Sunday afternoon.
At around 4 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service Detroit said that a winter storm warning for heavy snow has been issued for Monroe, Wayne, Macomb, St. Clair, Sanilac, and Huron Counties for 5 to 7 inches of snow. A winter weather advisory for the rest of southeast Michigan predicted 3 to 6 inches of snow.
MSP said Saturday afternoon that visibility was low and that vehicles were spotted in a ditch.
“Most of the roads have only one lane open,” the post continued. “The other lanes are snow covered, slow down. If you have to slam on your brakes for slowing traffic, increase your following distance and slow down. Pay attention to the road, other drivers and emergency vehicles, and slow down.”
