ALPENA (WWJ) – A Northern Michigan man is facing a long list of charges after a Michigan State Police trooper who went to give him help changing a flat tire discovered he was drunk.

It all happened around 10 p.m. Friday night in Alpena Township when a trooper on stationary patrol along US-23 near Bare Point Road saw a Subaru Outback pass by then make a u-turn.

A few moments later the trooper heard a loud noise and saw the Subaru pull over to the shoulder. As the trooper pulled up to check things out, the man stepped out and began getting items out of the trunk to change his tire.

The trooper offered to help the man, identified as 61-year-old Jeffrey Gordon Johnsen of Midland. After a short time of talking with Johnsen, the trooper suspected him of being under the influence. Johnsen was arrested for OWI after failing a series of field sobriety tests.

During a search of the Subaru the trooper recovered a rifle in the back and a loaded .357 caliber handgun in a duffle bag that was sitting on the front passenger seat. Johnsen did not have a permit to carry a concealed pistol.

The trooper also found a fixed blade knife and a machete inside the car, as well as four open cans of PBR. Johnsen was held in the Alpena County Jail.

Johnsen was arraigned in the 88th District Court in Alpena County on one count each of carrying a concealed weapon, loaded firearms in vehicle, possession of a pistol while under the influence, operating while intoxicated and open intoxicants in a vehicle.

Johnsen's bond was set at $2,500 or 10%. His next court date is scheduled for Dec. 4.
