MSU police investigating assault at campus library, believed to be motivated by sexual orientation bias

EAST LANSING (WWJ) -- Police are searching for suspects in a violent attack at the Michigan State University library that investigators believe was motivated by sexual orientation bias.

According to an alert issued by MSU police, two people were assaulted at the library, at 366 W. Circle Drive, Monday evening.

Police said officers responded at 5:50 p.m. on a report of an aggravated assault. The alert described the attack as: “A group of approximately five suspects assaulted two victims, intentionally selecting the victim(s) because of the perpetrator’s sexual orientation bias.”

Police believe five teenagers were involved in what's being investigated as a possible hate crime, but there are no suspects in custody at this time.

Police released the following descriptions of the suspects:

Suspect 1: Teen Black male, wearing khaki shorts, a Mountain Dew t-shirt and locs
Suspect 2: Teen Black male, wearing a white-hooded sweatshirt and black pants
Suspect 3: Teen Black male, wearing a white t-shirt, white shorts and locs
Suspect 4: Teen Black male, wearing red pants, black shirt and white sweatshirt
Suspect 5: Teen Black male, wearing a white t-shirt

As the investigation continues, anyone with information is asked to call MSU Police at 517-355-2221.
