DETROIT (WWJ) -- After more than a month of being closed, the new and improved Belle Isle Aquarium is set to be revealed to the general public this month.
The aquarium -- the oldest in the country, dating back to 1904 when it was designed by the famed architect Albert Kahn -- was renovated and redesigned over the last year after being shut down during the pandemic.
Doors will be reopened on July 16 and the aquarium is set to be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The aquarium has served the Detroit community as a popular attraction for more than a century, with thousands of Detroit school children visiting every year to learn about aquatic life and science.
The aquarium, located in Belle Isle Park in the Detroit River, will feature new exhibits and other new renovations, though officials did not immediately disclose what other changes have taken place.
The aquarium will be open for a media preview on Thursday, July 1.
Belle Isle Aquarium staff have “been an essential team during the pandemic, continuing to work daily to maintain care of the animals, manage facility improvements, enhance the visitor experience, and to continue education programs through virtual experiences,” officials said in a press release.
