DETROIT (WWJ) -- No charges will be filed after a traffic crash escalated into a deadly triple shooting.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said the 3 am. shooting at a west side Detroit gas station early Sunday was a justifiable case of self-defense.
Investigators said the three shooting victims — 24-year-old Lester Owens, 24-year-old Jasmine Sheeler, and 19-year-old Trevor Sheeler — followed a vehicle to the gas station on West McNichols, near Lahser, after a crash.
It's alleged that the trio forced the driver's door open and physically attacked the driver. During a struggle, a 22-year-old who was in the backseat of the car fired a gun, killing all three.
Prosecutors said the shooter was lawfully justified in opening while, while defending others.
The WCPO said, in a statement: "Under Michigan law a person can use deadly force if they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent imminent death or serious bodily harm to themselves or others.. After a careful review of the facts and evidence WCPO has determined that the warrant will be denied for insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the suspect did not act in lawful self-defense and in defense of others."
The name of the shooter was not released.
