Ambassador Bridge closure resulted from discovery of inactive grenades, driver not charged

WINDSOR, ONTARIO (WWJ) -- No charges have been filed after an American driver was found with possible explosives inside his vehicle at the Canadian border.

The scare that shut down U.S. traffic on the Ambassador Bridge for several hours on Monday resulted in the evacuation of an area of downtown Windsor, Ontario near the border.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) alerted Windsor Police Services (WPS) after two grenades reportedly submerged in an unknown white powdery substance were located inside a vehicle in the secondary inspection area.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody by CBSA. No other individuals were thought to be involved in the incident, and it was determined no direct threats were made, according to officials.

Further investigation by the Windsor Police Explosive Disposal Unit revealed that the white powder was not hazardous, and the grenades were inert -- or “Dummy Grenades.”

The driver of the vehicle was identified as an adult male U.S. citizen, who authorities will not publicly name. The bridge reopen to traffic just before 5 p.m. on Monday.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the CBSA returned the man to the custody of U.S Customs and Border Protection without incident.
