DETROIT (WWJ) -- There will be no tailgating permitted at Eastern Market for the next Detroit Lions home game.

Eastern Market executives say, "out of respect" for the victims shot to death Sunday afternoon and their families, they have decided to cancel tailgating for Monday Night Football on September 30.

Executives say they will use the time to work with Detroit Police on putting necessary safeguards in place.

"In addition, we are working toward establishing the Eastern Market campus as a 'weapon free zone' going forward," Eastern Market said, in a message posted to social media. "Following the pause on September 30th, we intend to resume the tailgating tradition for the remainder of the season after enacting additional and significant security protocols that will be communicated to the public in advance."

This statement comes after WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton reported officials were said to be evaluating "all options" — including eliminating tailgating — in the wake of Sunday's deadly double shooting after the Lions game.

"Security will be working with Detroit Police and with the city, and extra foot patrols will be implemented and likely there'll be more of a police presence," Langton said.

Management at area businesses, meanwhile, said they have been using private security companies.

As for what happened, Police Chief James White said the suspect and victims were “more than likely tailgating” at Shed 6 when they got into a fight, at around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, and someone pulled a gun. A man in his 40s died from gunshot wounds at the scene, and a man in his 20s was rushed to a hospital where police confirmed he later died of his injuries.

“Tailgating, drinking and guns…they don’t mix,” Chief White told reporters. “We see it at carnivals. We see it at social events. Everybody’s got to have a gun."

The alleged shooter, an Oak Park, man was arrested and remains in police custody. Langton said DPD investigators could submit charging paperwork to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for review as early as Tuesday.

Monday night, Shed 6 was packed with people holding a vigil to honor the two men who died.

Those gathered for the event identified one of the victims as 40-year-old Rayshawn Bryant, who went by "Ray."

WWJ's Darrylin Horne reports Bryant's friends and family said Ray wanted everyone to have a good time, and was trying to break up a fight when his life was taken from him.

Bryant's cousin, Dewan Ware, said: "He loved to dance... Betting on some sports, he was going to bet on it. And, oh, he loved his Spartans! I couldn't stand the Spartans, but he loved the Spartans, so that's what we used to bump heads at."

The name of the suspected gunman has not been released. White said it was not immediately clear if the shooter and the victims knew each other prior to this meeting, as the investigation continues.
