(WWJ) – Northern Michigan parents of a young child have been charged with child abuse and possession of meth after their baby was taken to the hospital with severe injuries.

Ryan Fraser, 39. and Alexis Davis, 21, both of Kalkaska, have been arraigned, months after the child's injuries were discovered.

Back in April the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post got a request to launch an investigation after doctors at a hospital discovered a seven-week-old infant’s injuries were not consistent with what the mother had told them.

Michigan State Police officials say the mother brought the infant in to the emergency room at Kalkaska Memorial Hospital in April and she told doctors the baby had rolled off the couch three days earlier.

But doctors said the injuries “were not consistent with the type of incident reported to hospital staff,” according to MSP.

After that discovery, officials executed a search warrant at a 5th-wheel camper in Mancelona, where Fraser and Davis lived. During the search, detectives recovered remnants of broken glass, which officials say “were once glass pipes used for smoking methamphetamine” and baggies containing meth residue.

Authorities also got search warrants for Davis’s phone. That’s when police developed Fraser as a suspect in the child’s injuries. A warrant was issued for Davis on Aug. 22 for possession of meth, while a warrant for Fraser was also issued for first-degree child abuse and possession of meth.

He was arrested and arraigned on Wednesday on the child abuse charge. During his arrest police also found him in possession of a short-barreled shotgun and meth in his car.

While Davis was released after her Sept. 19 arraignment, she failed to appear for her probable cause hearing this week.

Fraser was given a $10,000 cash bond. His next court date is scheduled for Oct. 18. Authorities are also pursuing charges for possession of the shotgun and drugs.
