'They don't belong in our back yards': Oakland County resident loses family dog to coyote

OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) -- Coyotes are proving to be a big threat in Oakland County as a resident loses his small dog to one who ended up in their back yard.

David Fishman was the owner of Nixon, a Yorkie Pomeranian, who only weighed 9 lbs. Nixon was grabbed out of their backyard -- through their fence -- by a coyote.

Fishman said officials in Franklin and Southfield Townships acknowledged the coyote threat, but said there was nothing they could do about it. He is worried about what happens if this threat escalates.

"What happens if someone's child -- or someone -- gets hurts? Then they're gonna do something about it," said Fishman. "It needs to be acted on because they [coyotes] don't belong in our backyards."

Fishman brought up taking this issue to Michigan legislators, but in the meantime said it's time to allow for trap-and-relocate to at least control the populations before coyotes get too far out of hand.
